Delivery and Site Prep
What has to be ready before your sauna arrives, and who is responsible for each part — the ground it sits on, the circuit that feeds it, and the assembly itself. The site-prep requirements here are the manufacturers' own.

Who is responsible for what
Most delivery problems are not delivery problems. They are a foundation that was not ready, or a circuit that was not run, discovered on the day the freight arrives. These are four separate jobs with four different owners, and they happen in a fixed order.
Delivery terms differ from product to product, so this guide does not state them. The product page and your quote are the authority on how a specific sauna ships and what that includes — ask us and we will confirm it for your model before you order.

The ground it sits on
Outdoor saunas are not free-standing furniture — the manufacturers specify what they may be set on, and the requirement is consistently a flat, level, load-bearing, well-drained surface.
Finnmark's barrel installation manual is specific about the acceptable options: “Acceptable foundations; concrete, gravel, wood decking.” For softer ground it does not say to level the soil and set the sauna down; it says to spread the load — “use pavers or flagstone under the sauna cradles to prevent sinking.”
SaunaLife's outdoor care guide asks for the ground to be replaced rather than merely flattened: the soil underneath “should be removed and replaced with a well-drained and load bearing material,” and it adds that limiting plant growth under and around the sauna reduces moisture damage.
Decide this before you order, not after. A foundation is the one item on this list that cannot be improvised on delivery day.

Leave room around it
Clearance is part of site prep, not a detail to settle once the cabin is in place. Finnmark's indoor manual asks for “a minimum of 3-inches of clearance from the top wall and all sides of the unit” so the power cord stays accessible.
Check your own model's manual for its figure rather than borrowing this one — clearances differ by cabin, and the manual for your exact unit is the authority. Every document we hold is on our manuals page.

The circuit is a separate job, and it comes first
A traditional electric heater needs its own circuit, run before the sauna arrives. This is not a step to leave until after assembly, and it is not a step to do yourself.
Harvia is explicit even at the small end of its range: its Vega manual covers a 1.9 kW heater rated for 110–240 V, and states that connection may only be performed by an authorised, licensed professional electrician, and that plugs are not allowed in the sauna room. If that applies to the smallest heater, it applies to everything above it.

Permit and inspection requirements vary by location, and we do not publish them. Your electrician and your local authority are the ones to confirm what your installation needs — we will not guess at it here.

What the warranty expects you to keep doing
Site prep is not finished at installation. Finnmark's outdoor warranty excludes damage arising from a failure to keep the sauna on “a flat, level, hardtop surface with adequate drainage,” and from a failure to keep the exterior clear of plants, trees, grasses, soil and snow deposits.
That is worth reading before you choose the spot. A site that drains poorly, or one that sits under vegetation, is a maintenance obligation for as long as you own the sauna — and, on Finnmark's terms, a coverage question.

Common questions
What do I need to have ready before delivery day?
The foundation and the electrical circuit. The manufacturers ask for a flat, level, load-bearing, well-drained surface — Finnmark lists concrete, gravel or wood decking as acceptable foundations — and a traditional heater needs its own circuit run by a licensed electrician. Assembly happens after the sauna arrives; those two do not.
Can I put an outdoor sauna straight onto grass or soil?
Not as-is. Finnmark's manual says to use pavers or flagstone under the sauna cradles to prevent sinking when installing on grass or organics, and SaunaLife's outdoor guide asks for the soil to be removed and replaced with a well-drained, load-bearing material.
Do I need an electrician, or can I plug it in?
For a traditional electric heater, an electrician. Harvia's Vega manual states that even its 1.9 kW, 110–240 V model may only be connected by an authorised, licensed professional electrician, and that plugs are not allowed in the sauna room. Check your own model's electrical row before you order.
Do I need a permit?
That depends on where you live, and we do not publish code or permit requirements. Ask your licensed electrician and your local authority — they are the ones who can answer it for your address.
How much clearance does it need?
