Sauna Heater Sizing: kW to Cubic Feet
How manufacturers match heater output to room volume, what an uninsulated wall does to the number, and why the heater is sized to the room rather than to the number of people.

The rule manufacturers actually publish
Sauna heaters are sized to room volume, not to floor area and not to how many people will sit in it. Every manufacturer publishes a table matching each model's output to a range of room volumes, and that table is the answer for that heater.
A 7 × 6 × 7 ft room is 294 cubic feet. In HUUM's 240 V tables that room falls inside the 6 kW rows (177–318 ft³) and the 9 kW rows (283–460 ft³) — both sizes are within HUUM's stated range for it, and the row for the heater you choose is the answer. Nothing here is our own formula; it is the manufacturer's table, read row by row.
The range is wide because it is doing real work. The low end suits a room that loses heat — glass, tile, a cold slab. The high end suits a tight, well-insulated cedar room. Sizing below a manufacturer's stated minimum is as much a fault as sizing above its maximum: an undersized heater runs constantly and never reaches temperature, and an oversized one overheats the air while the stones stay cool.
Uninsulated surfaces change the volume, not the heater
Glass, tile, brick and concrete absorb heat instead of holding it in, so manufacturers do not tell you to buy a bigger heater — they tell you to recalculate the room as if it were larger.
HUUM's installation manuals state it in imperial: “an additional 3.3 ft³ must be added to the sauna room volume for each 1 ft² of such wall; or 1 m³ for each 1 m².” A full-glass door of about 12 ft² therefore adds roughly 40 ft³ to the volume you size against.

What sizing does not tell you
A correctly sized heater still has to be wired. Output in kilowatts implies a current and a circuit, and those are on the heater's own spec table — not derived from the kW by us or by you. Have a licensed electrician confirm the circuit before installation.
Heater output also says nothing about ventilation, bench height or stone quantity, all of which change how a correctly sized sauna actually feels.
Common questions
Do I size the heater to the room or to the number of people?
To the room. Capacity tells you how many people fit on the benches; the heater is matched to the volume of air it has to heat. A four-person sauna with a high ceiling needs more output than a four-person sauna with a low one.
What counts as an uninsulated surface?
Glass, tile, brick, concrete and rendered surfaces — anything massive that absorbs heat rather than reflecting it back. Manufacturers handle it by adding to the room volume you size against, not by changing the heater.
What happens if the heater is too small?
It runs continuously and still struggles to reach temperature, which is hard on the elements. Manufacturers publish a minimum room volume as well as a maximum, and going under it voids some warranties.
Can I use a 240 V heater's kW to work out the amperage?
Do not. The manufacturer publishes the amperage and the breaker size on the spec table, and those figures account for things the arithmetic does not. Use the published number and have an electrician confirm it.
Does the ceiling height matter that much?
Yes, more than most people expect, because volume scales with it directly. Raising a 6 × 7 ft room from a 7 ft to an 8 ft ceiling adds 42 ft³ — often enough to move you to the next heater up.
