120V Plug-In vs 240V Saunas

What the supply actually decides — how hot the room gets, how fast, and whether you need an electrician before delivery.

The difference is power, and power is heat

A standard household outlet in North America is 120 V, usually on a 15 or 20 A circuit, which caps what any appliance plugged into it can draw. That ceiling is the whole story: it limits how much heat a sauna can produce, which limits how hot the room gets and how long it takes to get there.

A 240 V circuit removes that ceiling. It is also a circuit you do not already have — it has to be run to the sauna's location by a licensed electrician, and that is usually the largest single piece of install work.

Do not assume from the category

Infrared is not automatically 120 V and traditional is not automatically 240 V. Larger infrared cabins need 240 V, and there are small traditional heaters built for 120 V — the Harvia Vega Compact is one.

Combination saunas can need both, on separate circuits: the Finnmark Trinity models run their infrared panels on one supply and their traditional heater on another, and provisioning only one gets you half a sauna.

The product's own spec table is the answer, every time. Check it before you book an electrician, not after.

The question to ask before you buy

Not “which is better” — they do different jobs. Ask where the sauna is going, what is already run to that spot, and what it would cost to add a circuit there. That answer usually decides the sauna, rather than the other way round.

Common questions

Can I run a 240 V sauna from an adapter?

No. A 240 V appliance needs a 240 V circuit at the amperage on its spec table, installed by a licensed electrician. Adapters and extension cords are a fire risk.

Is a 120 V sauna a compromise?

It is a different product, not a lesser one. For an infrared cabin used by one or two people in a spare room, plug-in is the point. For a traditional sauna at Finnish temperatures, 120 V cannot deliver the output.

How do I know which one a specific sauna needs?

The spec table on its product page states the voltage, the amperage and the plug type. If a model offers both, they are listed as separate options because they are different products electrically.

Do any saunas need two circuits?

Yes. Combination saunas that pair infrared panels with a traditional heater run them on separate circuits, and both have to be provisioned. Each circuit is listed as its own row on the spec table.

Can an electrician quote before the sauna arrives?

Yes, and they should. Give them the voltage and amperage from the spec table and the location. Doing this before delivery is the difference between using the sauna that week and waiting for a panel upgrade.
