Shape is a heating decision before it is a styling one
A sauna's form changes how much air has to be heated and where that heat sits. A barrel's curved ceiling puts less air above the bench than a square room of the same footprint, so it comes up to temperature quickly and the heat stays where people are. A cabin's flat ceiling and straight walls give more usable interior volume and more room to stand.
That single difference — air above the bench — drives most of what follows.

What decides it in practice
Access. These arrive assembled or in large sections. Measure the gate, the side return and any step before choosing a form — a barrel that cannot get to the garden is not a barrel.
The base. All four need a level, load-bearing base sized to the filled weight. Barrels also need cradles, which is a different job from a slab.
Where it faces. A glass end wall is what makes an outdoor sauna worth having and also what changes the heater sizing, because glass is an uninsulated surface.
Wood matters more outdoors than in
Outdoors, the exterior timber is doing structural work against weather. Thermally modified woods — heat and steam treated rather than chemically preserved — take up less moisture, which is why they appear so often on outdoor models. Cedar is naturally durable and is common inside and out.
Left untreated, most of these weather to a silver grey. That is a finish preference, not a structural problem.

Does a barrel really heat faster than a cabin?
For the same footprint, yes — the curved ceiling means less air above the bench to heat. The honest comparison is by interior volume rather than by floor size, which is also how the heater is sized.
Which form needs the least site preparation?
None of them are trivial. All four need a level, load-bearing base. Barrels add cradles, and flat-roofed cubes need a drainage plan. The base is usually the longest lead item, so start it early.
Can these be used year-round in cold weather?
Outdoor saunas are built for it, and the practical questions are insulation, door seal and how far you have to walk. Expect a longer heat-up in winter than in mild weather.
Do I need planning permission?
That is set locally and varies by size, siting and whether it is wood-fired. Check before ordering rather than after — it can change which form you can put where.
How much clearance around the sauna?
Enough to maintain it and, for a wood-fired model, whatever the flue clearances require. Those come from the stove's manual and local fire code, not from the sauna's dimensions.
